‘Quarters for the Quake’ campaign raises more than $3,000

The “Quarters for the Quake” campaign in Rockford Public Schools has raised more than $3,000.
Washington Academy fifth-graders Angelica Bonner and Samantha Thammavongsa rallied students around a “Hope for Haitians” theme and raised $918.84. Each elementary classroom displayed a piggy bank for students to make donations; middle school students donated money in envelopes during their first-hour class.
Hillman Elementary School’s “Hearts for Haiti” campaign raised $316.33 from Feb. 3 through Feb. 12. Students purchased hearts, then wrote their names or a message on the heart and displayed them in the school’s hallways.
McIntosh Elementary School’s Student Council raised $173 during a five-day “Sweet Hearts for Haiti” fund-raising drive last week. Proceeds were earned through selling 25-cent lollipops and asking fourth- and fifth-graders to pay $1 for the privilege of a Valentine’s Day party where they did not have to wear their school uniforms.
Froberg Elementary School raised $417 with a penny drive organized by second-grader Paris Scott.
Money raised through the quarter drive will go toward the cost of the million meals being packaged by Sharefest volunteers. Auburn, East, Guilford and Jefferson high schools are serving as packing sites March 11-12, with students volunteering during the day and community members assisting in the evening.
