1 injured, 1 in custody after shooting at NIU

DEKALB, Ill.—According to the Northern Illinois University (NIU) Web site, university police are investigating a shooting that occurred on the DeKalb, Ill., campus during the morning hours of Friday, Feb. 19. Police are calling the shooting an isolated incident between two individuals.

“One individual is injured and another has been taken into custody for a shooting that occurred during the morning hours on the NIU campus,” the Northern Star student newspaper reported (click here to read the report).

The Northern Star article added :“As of press time, there have been no confirmed dead. As of 5:43 a.m., NIU Police have issued an ‘all clear’ for the rest of campus.”

According to a Campus Alert posted on the NIU Web site: “The incident occurred near the Stevenson Residence Hall. An NIU student was injured in the shooting, and was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for treatment.

“NIU Public Safety officials are stating that the event appears to be an isolated incident between two individuals, and that the alleged assailant is in police custody.

“NIU Public Safety officials are advising all students, and campus residents to take extra precaution on Friday morning, and to be alert for any unusual circumstances.  If students observe anything that appears to be out of the ordinary they are asked to call NIU Public Safety at 815-753-1212.

“The NIU campus remains open, and all classes will be held as scheduled.”

Last week was the two-year anniversary of a shooting rampage at NIU that left five students dead before the gunman killed himself.
