April 30 application deadline for Greenwich Village Art Fair

Traditions. Families have them and communities have them. Rockford Art Museum’s (RAM) Greenwich Village Art Fair is a tradition that has been celebrated for 62 continuous years. That’s an amazing TRADITION. Although we haven’t yet thawed out, it isn’t too early to “Save the Date” for this year’s two-day outdoor fine art fair—Sept. 18 and 19.
More than 100 juried artists from across the country will converge to present one of the community’s most anticipated cultural events and display their works of art in the categories of three-dimensional functional and non-functional, two-dimensional medium, jewelry, photography and painting. A call for entries is under way. All artists interested in participating should visit www.rockfordartmuseum.org/gvaf.html for a downloadable prospectus and application. The application postmark deadline is April 30.
Bohemian Bazaar vendors market their wares in a less traditional and more casual setting, selling items such as beaded jewelry, soaps, moccasins and homemade candles, as well as vintage clothing and leather and stationery items. The application will be on the Web site for anyone interested in participating in this venue.
Another Greenwich tradition is the open-air market where visitors may sample cheeses, dips, dried herbs, fine wines and specialty beers. The Gourmet Marketplace has been a popular addition to the fine art fair for many years. Spaces are limited, so interested vendors should visit the museum Web site for a prospectus and application.
If you would like to support the tradition of Greenwich Village Art Fair in a more substantial way, consider sponsoring a Collector’s Purchase Award. Purchase Award pledges are accepted in the amounts of $100, $250, $500 and $1,000. All pledged funds are used by the sponsor for the purchase of a piece of art from the more than 100 artists displaying at the fair. Purchase Award sponsors are recognized in print materials, and they present an award ribbon to the artist. For the past several years, sponsors have provided $10,000 annually in Purchase Awards. This generous commitment from the community encourages artists from all over the country to apply to our fair.
Begun in 1948, Greenwich Village Art Fair has grown from a small band of local artists displaying their art on the lawn into one of the community’s most respected and largely attended art fairs. The fair’s success can be attributed to its many dedicated chairmen, committees and, of course, volunteers over the years.
However, we must also recognize and applaud the Rockford community that has enthusiastically supported this fine art fair for well more than half a century. We can all be proud of that tradition!
