Seven Rockford schools on state honor roll

Seven schools in the Rockford School District have been named to the 2009 Illinois Honor Roll by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Washington Gifted School received an Academic Excellence Award for sustained high performance for at least three years. Elementary and middle schools in the excellence category must have 90 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in both reading and math. Washington serves students in first through eighth grade.
Six elementary schools—Thompson, Rolling Green, New Milford, Johnson, Gregory and Cherry Valley earned the Spotlight School Award for high-poverty, high-achieving schools that “are beating the odds and overcoming the achievement gap.” Spotlight honors go to schools with at least half of the students coming from low-income families and at least 70 percent meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math.
Across the state, 438 schools were recognized with Excellence Awards. Spotlight Awards went to 425 schools in Illinois.
