Celebrate Women’s History Month at the Ethnic Heritage Museum

There are amazing stories of women in history. This month, the Ethnic Heritage Museum, 1129 S. Main St., Rockford, recognizes local women who have an outstanding record of accomplishments in the community. These are Rockford women who epitomize volunteerism, citizenship and a strong cultural connection to the community.
Sunday, March 7, Hispanic Gallery, Patty Bachmann—A native of Peru, honoree Patty Bachmann is a full scholarship recipient at Augustana College, a Rockford La Voz Latina volunteer, tutor, a Rockford Schools bilingual educator and mentor. She is a Golden Apple Teacher and Golden Apple Foundation volunteer. She also organized the “Read to Give to the Heifer Program” where children read books to obtain funds to buy farm animals for needy communities in Guatemala, Peru and Africa. She has shared her educational experience in America while visiting the Dual Language Schools in her country of Peru.
Sunday, March 7, Irish Gallery, Josephine “Jody: M. Deery—Irish Gallery also celebrates the 100th year anniversary of the Catholic Women’s League. With an R.N. degree from St. Anthony’s School, Josephine Deery is the owner and CEO of Rockford Speedway. She has assumed local leadership roles in the American Lung Association, Catholic Charities, Catholic Women’s League, Rockford MetroCentre Board, Blackhawk Area Council Boy Scouts, Rock River Valley Girl Scouts, and St. James Church in Rockford. Other community contributions include Junior League and Maya’s House. Her hobbies include collecting nativity sets from various countries.
Time: 2-4 p.m. Community welcome! Donations accepted. Hispanic and Irish ethnic treats available in each gallery.
In addition to these special Women’s History Honoree Celebrations, visitors can enjoy the African-American Gallery displays of African-American Life in the 1800’s post-Civil War. A collection of Rockford College President Dr. and Mrs. Robert Head’s family artifacts from this time period are on exhibit.
Another stop is the Italian Gallery’s Carnevale display, which represents the beautiful Italian costumes worn during the 1800’s city-wide festivals. On display will be masks purchased in Venice, “Queen of the Adriatic.”
