Klehm Arboretum upcoming events: Chicago Flower Show bus trip March 10

Seats are still available on the Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden bus trip to the Chicago Flower Show at Navy Pier, Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

The bus will depart Klehm, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford, at 9 a.m. and return to Klehm at 5 p.m. Price is $45 per person including bus transportation, show ticket, snacks and beverages. Klehm members receive a $5 discount. Free secure parking in the Klehm parking lot, 2715 S. Main St. Continental breakfast will be served in Klehm’s Visitors Center beginning at 8:30 a.m.

March gardening classes at Klehm

Do you want a healthy and productive garden this year? Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden programs will show you the best practices for preparing and planting a successful garden.

Growing your own plants can be a cost-effective and fun activity for your family. Join Klehm Arboretum’s Horticulture Director John Moors as he shows you everything a first-time gardener needs to know about growing plants from seeds. He’ll discuss propagation, equipment needs, timing, lighting, transplanting and mail order resources that will help you grow strong, healthy plants.

Sign up for “Starting Plants from Seeds” to be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 13. Cost is $14 to members, $16 non-members at www.klehm.org or call (815) 965-8146.

Basic Vegetable Gardening

Join Klehm Arboretum’s Horticulture Director John Moors from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 27 and learn the basics of creating a chemical-free and productive vegetable garden. Topics include amending your soil, organic pest control, composting, mulching, crop rotation and how to begin the transition from traditional to organic gardening.
