Fight at East High School results in seven arrests
By Joe McGehee
Seven female students at East High School were arrested today (March 11) stemming from a fight that erupted in the hallways involving eight students before classes began. Rockford police officers were called to the scene, and one student was taken to the hospital after being struck with a padlock.
“The fight broke out in the hallway this morning before first hour,” said District 205 Chief of Student Support Colleen Cyrus. “Eight students were involved in the altercation, which resulted in the arrests of seven female students.”
According to Cyrus, the incident report classified the fight as Fighting II. District 205’s discipline code defines Fighting II as “a fight which results in injury and a significant disruption to the learning environment.”
“Any time there is a fight involving more than one student, we classify it as group violence,” Cyrus said. “And, since a student was struck with an object, there is the possibility of a weapons charge as well.”
Cyrus stated that District 205 is continuing to investigate today’s altercation and will recommend the students involved for discipline according to the district’s discipline code.
