Rockford schools prepare 515,000 meals for shipment as part of Million Meals for Haiti

Students in Rockford Public Schools surpassed their goal of packing 500,000 meals for earthquake victims March 12 when Guilford and Jefferson high schools ended a three-day marathon by bagging and boxing a combined 238,000 dried food mixes.
At Jefferson, students assembled 110,000 meals. Guilford packed 128,000 meals, with the assistance of 200 students on loan from Eisenhower Middle School. The day ended with a busload of students from Ellis Arts Academy processing 8,000 meals after school at Heartland Community Church.
Combined with 269,000 meals turned out Wednesday and Thursday at Auburn, East and Roosevelt, Rockford students prepared 515,000 meals for shipment as part of the Million Meals for Haiti campaign organized by Sharefest, a charitable arm of Heartland.
Enthusiasm for the effort was generated in part by the newly formed Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, which set the 500,000 goal and launched a “Take It Halfway” campaign in the high schools. Elementary and middle schools also participated in a “Quarters for the Quake” drive, which brought in more than $11,000 by the close of schools Friday, March 12.
All told, Rockford schools raised nearly $25,000 for Haiti relief efforts including the American Red Cross. One such school, Kishwaukee Elementary, already had collected $603 for the Red Cross and struggled to get a second fund drive off the ground until fifth-graders ran a snack sale that netted another $424.
