Sony obtains rights to Michael Jackson material

In a contract that includes the rights to DVDs, unreleased recordings and video games, Sony Music Entertainment has reached an agreement with the administrators of Michael Jackson’s estate for a reported $250 million.
According to insiders, the contract will last for seven years and could include rights to unreleased Jackson material.
Jackson was $500 million in debt when he died last June. His tour, upcoming record sales and a score of merchandising campaigns were expected to gross more than $250 million. Jackson’s backlog also continues to defy trends and has sold more than 30 million copies since he died.
As for new Jackson material, Sony execs said there will be several projects spanning different markets.
“There may be theater (and) there may be films and movies,” Sony Chairman Rob Stringer said. “There may be computer games or multimedia platforms that I don’t know about today that will happen in 2015.”
Jackson died June 25, 2009. His personal physician, Conrad Murray, who was present when the singer collapsed, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for prescribing Jackson an array of prescription drugs.
