Music Director Steven Larsen and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 20, at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. The concert features baritone Gerard Sundberg, tenor Geoffrey Agpalo, and the Mendelssohn Chorale’s long-anticipated return to the Classics Series.

The concert, titled “God Save the King!,” features works by three celebrated composers who, despite being German-speaking, found a singular creative outlet in England. The program includes a complete Coronation Anthem by Handel, excerpts from his oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (after Messiah, his most-frequently performed choral work), a “London” symphony by Haydn, and selections from Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Tickets for this concert are available at, by calling (815) 965-0049, or visiting the Coronado Performing Arts Center Box Office at 314 N. Main St. Ticket prices range from $18 to $54. Student tickets are just $6.

To enhance the concert experience, the program notes are available online via the RSO Web site. Patrons are also invited to attend the pre-concert lecture by Steven Larsen at 6:30 p.m. the night of the concert in the theater.

Mendelssohn Chorale Director Marti Bein and Chorale members Kathy Stevens and Bill Shold join Maestro Steven Larsen for SoundBites, an informal discussion offering a personal perspective by the musicians on varying topics.

SoundBites takes place Friday, March 19, from noon to 1 p.m., at Kiki B’s, 1641 N. Alpine Road. Previous discussions have included insights into the performers’ backgrounds, personal challenges, and their reflections on the music they will perform with the RSO. There is also ample opportunity for those attending the discussions to join in with questions or comments.

SoundBites is free; however, space is limited. Call Lorie Langan at (815) 972-2939 for reservations. Lunch is available for purchase at KiKi B’s.
