Goodwill’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site offers free tax preparation

April 15 is the last day to file taxes, and Goodwill’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site is opening its doors at 1907 Kishwaukee St. in Rockford an extra day to help one last time during the 2010 tax season. Those who qualify for the free service are invited from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, April 15, for free tax preparation service.
To qualify for free tax preparation at Goodwill’s VITA site, family income must be less than $50,000 and individual income less than $25,000.
Those visiting the volunteer tax site should bring a valid picture ID, a copy of last year’s tax return, Social Security cards for for themselves and any family member they wish to claim, W-2s, 1099s, and a blank check for direct deposit.
The VITA site is also open other hours during the week. For more information, contact Courtney Geiger at (815) 987-6226.
Goodwill’s free tax site has helped 619 people in the Rockford community get their taxes done for free this year. The tax site, with the help of IRS certified volunteers, has been able to give $1,188,789.00 in refunds back to the community.
The volunteer tax assistors, people who live and work in the community who are dedicating their time to help, also assist community members in claiming any special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. Of the 619 returns prepared at Goodwill’s VITA site, 179 have been able to claim the EITC credit with their help.
