Benefit April 17 for Jamie Bubser

From contributed information

Jamie Bubser of Pecatonica, Ill., started battling cancer in 2006, when he went to the doctor because a mole behind his ear grew and changed shape. He had surgery twice to remove the melanoma cancer, and doctors took 75 lymph nodes, many of which had cancerous cells.

In June of 2009, Bubser began suffering from strong headaches, which he first attributed to some new blood pressure medication. The headaches did not stop and only became more frequent. By November, the headaches hadn’t stopped, and Bubser went to the doctor for an MRI.

A golf-ball-sized tumor was found above his ear—on his brain with melanoma cancer. After a CAT scan, cancer was also found in his lungs, abdomen and several other places. He underwent radiation for two weeks, right after Christmas, and then followed up with a week of chemotherapy. Doctors are hoping to reduce the size of the cancer and kill any more cancerous cells developing. Because the cancer is in the middle of his lung, surgery is not an option for Bubser at this time.

Doctors have told Bubser that an average person might have a year left, and then others have lived for 10-15 years. His friends and family hope the best for him and are hosting a benefit  Saturday, April 17, at the American Legion on Main Street in Pecatonica, Ill. It will start at 4 p.m., and dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. Mostaccioli, salad, bread and dessert will be available for $5 per person. Throughout the evening, there will be a silent auction, raffles and 50/50 drawings.

Live entertainment will be provided by The Ear Hustlers from 4-7:30 p.m. and Cross Cut will perform from 8 p.m-midnight. The auction includes items of gift certificates from Resorts, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, many NASCAR drivers, Glenn Beck, Larry the Cable Guy, Blackhawks, Cubs, Packers, John Grisham, IceHogs, Chicago Bears, oil changes and Auto Detailing. Quilts, massages, a Jeff Foxworthy autographed book, vacation packages, Harley-Davidson items, and many other items will be available for bid.

Jamie Bubser health update

At Bubser’s last doctor’s visit, he had an MRI and CT scan of his entire body. The MRI showed five more cancer cells in his brain, which were not there following his surgery. The cancerous tumor in his left lung had reduced in size, but the tumor in his right lung had increased in size. His oncologist and radiologist decided to give him one more round of chemotherapy (a larger dose) to attempt to kill the cancer cells in his brain and reduce the other tumors. He returned to UW Madison March 26 for another CT scan and an MRI Stealth (which shows every cell in the brain). He will be going back in another month for more treatment.
