Bowling season of highs and lows ends wtih tragic loss

Last night (Tuesday, April 13) was the last night of bowling for the 2009-10 season for our team in the Men’s Fellowship League at Cherry Bowl. It looks as though our team, Carlson Plumbing, will finish in second place out of 16 teams.
I’ve been bowling in a league for at least 15 or more years, and to the best of my memory, this is the highest finishing team I’ve ever been on. Our team had averages from 158 all the way up to 220. I finished the season with a 199 average. That was one pin short of my goal, but still 5 pins over last season’s average.
It was a season of personal highs and lows. Back in September, I think it was the second week of the season, I bowled my first-ever 700 series. I had games of 246, 257 and 228 for a 731 total. I’ve had a total of 45 games of 200 or better and 12 nights I turned in series of 600 or better. My high game of the year was a 278 back on March 16. I had 11 strikes in that game. Those were some of the highlights.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, a couple of weeks ago, our league lost one of our long-time bowlers and a lifelong friend to the guys on his team. Unexpectedly, Tony Perrone had a heart attack and passed away on a Monday. It was unreal to have him bowling with us as usual the previous Tuesday night and then a week later to have him gone forever. God rest his soul.
At this time of year, many of the guys in our league are glad the season is ending. Their attention turns to golf and softball. I can’t say I blame them. My only problem is I’ve aged out of softball and I don’t nearly have the success on the golf course that I do on the lanes. I’ll miss the fun and camaraderie each week until we reconvene around Labor Day.
