Gay rights activist to speak at April 17 Rockford College film screening

From press release

Saturday, April 17, Rockford College’s Gay/Straight Alliance will host a free screening of the award-winning film Milk in Maddox Theater on the Rockford College campus.

The evening also includes a speaker, reception, raffle drawings and surprise unveiling.

Donations and proceeds from the raffles will be given to REMEDIES, formerly known as WAVE (Women Against Violent Environments) in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Andy Thayer, a prominent Chicago gay rights and anti-war activist, will speak about his experiences as an activist preceding the reception and screening of the film. In November 2008, Thayer organized a protest in Chicago responding to the passage of Proposition 8, the California ballot measure banning same-sex marriage; Thayer was jailed for four days and fined $1,000.

Milk, starring Sean Penn, follows the adult life of the iconic Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office.
