This bawdy comedy started as a Mel Brooks movie, became a Tony Award-winning theatrical show, and another popular movie based on the musical. This over-the -top show involves an unscrupulous producer and an accountant who decide to defraud their financial backers by producing a show that is sure to flop, and then pocketing the investors’ cash.
The producer and accountant follow a devious plan: “Step 1: We find the worst play ever written. Step 2: We hire the worst director in town. Step 3: We raise $2 million …one for me, one for you. Step 4: We hire the worst actors in New York and open on Broadway and before you can say Step 5, we close on Broadway, take our $2 million, and go to Rio!”
To their horror, the show they’ve selected, Springtime for Hitler, is a rousing success, and they find themselves with a hit on their hands. Many lights of regional theater appear on stage, including Jim Crow, John Chase and Aaron Matthew Ray. The show is directed by Roger DeSchoepper.
