The Rockford chapter of AmeriCorps will focus on the importance of community service May 8-15.

Volunteer members of AmeriCorps, a branch of Comprehensive Community Solutions, the parent of YouthBuild Rockford, will work with city officials and area business owners to host four special events, each related to giving back to community.

Titled “Getting things Done,” the program will consist of a community gardening outing, food drive, furniture drive and Double Dutch jump rope exhibit.

AmeriCorps members will be accepting non-perishable food items May 8, 10-12, at the Comprehensive Community Solutions Re-Use Center and area supermarkets. Food items will be donated to the Rock River Valley Food Pantry. Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The CCS Re-Use Center also will be accepting furniture donations of couches, beds and dining tables May 10-15. Items will be donated to the organization’s Project Welcome Home program, which donates furniture to displaced area families. The warehouse will accept items from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gardening officials will join AmeriCorps and interested volunteers at the Booker Washington Community Center to begin cultivating one of the city’s community gardens. The garden will be open to volunteers May 14-15 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Also at the Washington Community Center, children ages 10 to 16 will host a Double Dutch jump rope exhibition. Each participant learned the skills from a host of AmeriCorps members. The event, known as “Jump 4 Health,” will include a presentation from Carol Erickson, from the University of Illinois Extension Family Nutrition Department.

Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I) will proclaim May 8-15 as AmeriCorps Week at the May 10 meeting of the city council.

The Comprehensive Community Solutions Re-Use Center is at 907 S. Main St. The Booker Washington Center is at 534 Kent St.
