Rock River Chapter disaster volunteers headed to Tennessee

In the wake of a devastating weather system that left towns flooded and residents displaced, the American Red Cross is on the ground throughout the South assessing needs and providing support.
Volunteers from the Rock River Chapter of the American Red Cross will leave tomorrow morning (Wednesday, May 12) for Tennessee, bringing the number of emergency response vehicles in the state to 47. Additionally, since the flooding began, the Red Cross has opened 31 shelter/evacuation centers; served 56,998 meals; distributed 12,548 Clean-Up Kits containing brooms, bleach, gloves, mops, heavy duty garbage bags and other cleaning materials; dispatched 1,490 Red Cross employees; and dispatched 1,404 Red Cross volunteers.
Help for people affected by disasters like the floods in Tennessee is made possible by donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. On those rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.
“We have to do more than cross our fingers when it comes to preparing for disasters,” relates Dr. Robert Willis, executive director of the Rock River Chapter. “Locally, we rely on the generosity of individuals and companies to raise funds for relief operations that affect people down the street and around the Rock River Valley.”
Upcoming events like the 5k PEAK Run for Relief (June 12) and Q98.5 presents Rock’n for the RED: An Evening with Sara Evans (June 19) are vehicles to drive donations for local disaster response. The Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those affected by all disasters.
