The father of Chicago hit-and-run victim, Kirkland, Ill. native, Dan Firkins, said Friday, May 21, his son will be taken off life support within the next few days.
Firkins, 32, has been in critical condition at Illinois Masonic Medical Center since being dragged by a taxi and left lifeless on a busy street a week ago.
Police say Firkins hailed a cab at approximately 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 14 near the 1600 block of North Honore.
During an argument with the driver, he leaned toward the window when the cabbie sped off with Firkins partially inside the car.
After dragging the victim, the driver fled.
Tire marks were found on Firkins’ legs, leading investigators to believe he was also run over.
Sources inside the Chicago Police Department said Friday, May 21, the case is being worked as a homicide, as investigators were told early on that Firkins’ chance of surviving were slim.
Firkins suffered two skull fractures and a brain injury that required doctors to remove half of his skull while they attempted to stabilize him in a drug-induced coma.
Meanwhile, Firkins’ father, David Firkins, said the incident was a “senseless act.”
“This man has destroyed my son’s life — he has murdered my son,” David Firkins said in an earlier report.
Today, via Facebook, David Firkins talked about how he and Dan’s mother, Maureen, will spend the rest of their son’s life.
“Dan just had his last rites read,” the Facebook post says. “Today is our anniversary and his mother did not want to let him pass today because this is the day we brought him home from the hospital 32 years ago.”
Chicago police have described the cab as a white car with a blue stripe. No description of the driver has been made public.
Investigators are also in the process of reviewing security camera footage from businesses near North Honore and North Avenue.
Police said Firkins, a graduate student, hailed the cab to get to an evening class at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
