Hononegah dominates boys track sectional
By Matt Nestor
The Hononegah Indians were disappointed that they had to share the NIC-10 championship with Jefferson the previous weekend. So they took out their frustration on the field in their IHSA Class 3A sectional in Huntley.
The Indians won the team title at the sectional with 91.5 points, easily distancing themselves from second-place Barrington, who scored 78 points. More importantly for the Indians, they will send representatives to the state meet in eight different events.
Sophomore Dragan Simic will compete in multiple events for the Indians, qualifying in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.32 as well as with the 4×800 relay team.
Junior Connor Hammack will do the same, qualifying in the 100-meter dash at 11.17 as well as the 4×100 relay team.
In addition, seniors Tyler Zimmerman (shot put), Kevin Jacobs (3200), and Ben Friske (400) will also compete downstate. They will be joined by junior Lucas Limberg, who qualified in the high jump.
The individual star of the day was Corey Householder of Harlem. The Huskies junior qualified in three events.
Householder started off qualifying in the long jump at 21’5”. Then Householder qualified in both hurdles events, the 110 and the 300. In each event, he had the fifth-best qualifying time in the state.
Co-conference champion Jefferson will send two downstate, with junior Steve Hartzell also qualifying in the long jump as well as their 4×200 relay team. Guilford senior Matt Johnson also qualified in the high jump.
In 2A, Belvidere North finished fourth in their sectional, but will have athletes compete in six different events in the state meet. Senior Nate Berg led the way for the Blue Thunder, competing in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Junior Paul Zeman will also compete in two events, the 1600 and 3200.
