Crayon Recycling Drive runs through June 15

LOVES PARK, Ill.—Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful’s (KNIB) annual Crayon Recycling Drive began Tuesday, June 1, and ends Tuesday, June 15. This recycling program collects used and broken crayons from school lockers, art classrooms, day care centers and playrooms.
Crayons may be dropped off at KNIB’s Recycling Center in Roscoe from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 5, and Saturday, June 12. The Recycling Center is on the frontage road, a half-mile north of McCurry Road and Route 251 in Roscoe.
Crayons may also be dropped off at KNIB’s office 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. The office is at 5417 N. Second St., in Loves Park. The crayons will be accepted in the office through Tuesday, June 15, and at the Recycling Center through Saturday, June 12.
Lori Gummow, executive director of KNIB, said: “Each year, we collect more and more crayons as people have become familiar with this program. We need volunteers to help remove the wrappers from the crayons and sort them by color. This is a great project for scout troops and school groups. When that task is completed, we need volunteers to melt the crayons and make new ones using candy molds. These new crayons are given to the children who attend our educational presentations. They really enjoy receiving the new crayons in the shape of animals, cars and flowers.”
