Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful hosts Medication Collection June 12

From press release

LOVES PARK, Ill.—Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful’s (KNIB) third annual Medication Collection will be Saturday, June 12. The main collection site is at Machesney Park Mall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Smaller satellite locations will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and are in Belvidere at the Township Building, 8200 Fairgrounds Road, and in Freeport at the Senior Resource Center, 1237 W. Galena Ave., which is inside the Lincoln Mall.

Lori Gummow, KNIB executive director, said: “The proper disposal of medications is on the forefront of today’s environmental issues. We are pleased to be able to expand this service to more area residents and offer them an environmentally sound way to dispose of their unwanted medications. With three sites this year, we expect to collect well over the 1,400 pounds of medications taken in last year.”

Studies have shown that disposing of medications by flushing or pouring them down the drain is not safe and poses a health risk to residents and aquatic life through the contamination of lakes, streams and drinking water. Prescription medications are also one of the most commonly-abused drugs by teen-agers.

The Medication Collection will accept prescription, over-the-counter and veterinary medications, inhalers and mercury-filled thermometers at all locations. Items not accepted at all locations include illegal drugs, needles, sharps and biohazardous materials. Residents are asked to keep their medications in the original packaging or prescription bottles. Their name and address should be removed, but not the name of the medication.

For more information regarding the Medication Collection, visit www.knib.org or call KNIB at (815) 637-1343.
