Alan is a 1-year-old, outgoing, friendly and affectionate lap cat who likes to give kisses and is one of almost 70 cats and kittens currently looking for homes at Winnebago County Animal Services.

To celebrate June as Adopt A Cat Month, anyone who adopts an adult cat, 1 year and older, will receive a free litter pan, scoop, handmade cat carrier mat, bag of dry cat food, DVD on pet care and nutrition, along with one-year vaccinations and pet license, spay/neuter and microchip. The litter pan and scoop are being donated by the shelter’s Voluntary Auxiliary, and the handmade mats are donated by a local cat lover. The adoption fee for cats older than 1 year is $40 each; cats in the Lonely Hearts Club are $25 each, and kittens are $85 each.

“We have cats of every breed, age, color and personality that come through our shelter every day,” explains Donna Apgar, adoption coordinator. “People often overlook the adult cats and don’t realize that an adult cat may be a better choice.”

When you meet an adult cat, you pretty much know what you are getting as far as activity level, personality and sociability. Older cats are not as messy or destructive as kittens. They don’t tear around the house, climb your curtains, chew on electric cords, or get into as much trouble. Adult cats are usually calmer, have been litter-trained, and may have been trained to use a scratching post. Since most adult cats in shelters have been previously owned, they may even come already declawed. Cats also make great apartment pets or are a better choice for busy people.
