As the author of Be Good to Your Gut, the idea of providing lifestyle tips for people to manage their digestive disorders is appealing. I did, however, take exception with the comment about avoiding sugars. Moderation is a more reasonable approach – even in people with these conditions. When it comes to sweeteners there’s no reason to demonize high fructose corn syrup or other sugars. Honey, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup all have the same 4 calories per gram. They have a similar makeup, and are metabolized in the same way.
As a registered dietitian, consultant to the food industry (like the Corn Refiners Association), and a college professor I use evidence-based research to convey messages. Clearly, there are always individual needs to consider. Everyone can start with moderation and let their body dictate the rest.
