Canoe and Kayak Races set for July 18

The Lena Community Park District and Friends of the Pecatonica River Foundation will host the Third Annual Illinois Paddling Council Sanctioned Canoe and Kayak Races Sunday, July 18, at McConnell’s “Bobtown” Landing. A Pro-Series race of 13.74 miles from McConnell to Winslow’s Brewster Landing and back and an Amateur Series race of 6 miles from McConnell to a turn-around 3 miles upriver and back will both be held. In all, there will be 42 race entry categories.

Watch amateurs and pros compete for points and awards in this annual event. Racers from throughout the Midwest will test their skills on the upriver current of the mighty Pecatonica. Last year’s winners completed the 10-mile course in less than 1 hour. You and your family are invited for great fun with food and beverage available at the landing. A great day of fun, competition and fellowship on the Pecatonica River.

At approximately 10 a.m., Saturday, July 17, the Illinois Brigade of the Voyager Canoeist will be launching from Winslow’s Brewster Landing and spending the afternoon and evening at McNeil’s Damascus Landing (arriving around 2 p.m.) and then continuing Sunday, July 18, to Tutty’s Crossing at Freeport. Great viewing and photo opportunities will be available at Brewster’s Landing-Winslow, McConnell’s “Bobtown” Landing-McConnell, Meet and Greet from 2-5 p.m. at McNeil’s Damascus Landing-Damascus.
