Athletes from around the world recently converged on Carson, Calif., to compete in the Fourth Annual CrossFit Games.

Among the athletes involved were several from the Rockford area who gave great showings.

The CrossFit Games are a series of different workouts and events that athletes compete in to determine the most fit athletes in the world. Individual and team competitions are included. The events are kept secret until minutes before the event, meaning the athletes aren’t able to train for anything specifically and must be in top shape.

The Rockford team performed great in the event, taking ninth place out of 70 teams from around the world. The team was represented by Brandon Pastorek, Dan Colson, Dan Drall, Krista Colson, Tosha Jefferies and Elise Jahn. The team was coached by Brent Colson.

The team’s best event was the max overhead, which consists of 1-minute max reps deadlift, 1-minute max reps pistols and 1-minute max calories row. The Rockford team finished fourth overall in the event.

“There are so many good athletes out here,” the Rockford coach said. “And that showed in how competitive a race it was.”

The Rockford team also finished seventh in another event and didn’t finish any worse than 27th in any of the five events. CrossFit Fort Vancouver won the overall team title by finishing in the top eight in every event.

Rhonda Pierce also performed well in the individual competition. The Rockford-area airline stewardess finished 13th overall in the Women’s Masters category for athletes older than 50. Lauria Carver of Redmond, Wash., won the category.

Brian Curley of Boston won the Men’s Masters. Graham Holmberg of Albany, Ohio, won the Men’s Individual category as the most fit man in the world, while Kristan Clavar of Sherman Oaks, Calif., won the Women’s Individual category.
