Back-to-School Health & Safety Fair Aug. 18 at Salvation Army Millennium Center

Winnebago County Health Department (WCHD) presents “Blastoff! Back-to-School Health & Safety Fair” for children from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Salvation Army Millennium Center, 220 S. Madison St., Rockford.

The event offers many fun activities for children returning to school, including interactive demonstrations, games and giveaways. School physicals, dental exams and immunizations will be available for children who still need them, and appointments can still be made by calling (815) 720-4213.

Health-related activities and participating organizations include: tooth brushing demonstration from WCHD’s Dental Hygiene Program, information about disabilities and an obstacle course from RAMP, developmental screenings provided by Easter Seals and Child & Family Connections, games and information from the Health Department’s REALITY anti-smoking program, screening and information about WCHD’s Lead Program and a booth with information about services at Crusader Clinic.

Safety-related activities and participating organizations include: information and games from Illinois Poison Control, relay races from Safe Kids (bicycle checks and safety info, railroad crossing, home and fire safety), information and games from Violence Enders bullying program, swimming and water safety demo from Swim-N-More, bus crossing safety from Rockford School District 205 Transportation Department, information about bite and animal safety from Winnebago County Animal Services, and a booth with information from the Rockford Police Department.

Other participating organizations include: Educators of Beauty, Rockford IceHogs, Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA and the Girl Scouts, to name a few. Many booths and games feature prizes for children such as T-shirts, back-to-school supplies, coupons for haircuts, Boys & Girls Club scholarships and much more!
