To the Editor: Unions not helping the middle class

Editor’s note: The following is in response to the Aug. 25-31 Guest Column “Are all parachutes real?”
I read the guest column by Paula Coulahan (twice). There is a lot of “Oh, poor me!” whining…look at my sacrifices, look at my good intentions, look what they did to me, etc., etc. However, there is more.
Ms. Coulahan states that “it points to a trend, not just in Rockford and not just in education, to devalue unions and break their membership.” That’s rich! With the most pro-union president and Congress in recent memory? I don’t think so.
She winds up by pointing out “the role of unions in preserving the middle class and protecting the disenfranchised.”
I have no problem with the concept of unions generally, but to credit them with “preserving the middle class” is a bit of a stretch.
Anyway, since unions tend to vote heavily Democratic, I would opine that they are much more likely to destroy the middle class than preserve it.
