When asked in the preseason about his team speed, Guilford coach Mel Gilfillan talked about the running backs, but then brought the conversation back to his senior quarterback.

It was the same quarterback who kept trying to bring his team back against Boylan when the Titans blitzed the Vikings for 49 points. It is also the same quarterback who led his team to 54 points when Belvidere North put up a usually good enough 35.

So, when Belvidere led 6-0 at the half, Gilfillan was not really shocked when Bell came up with 66 yards on two carries on two separate drives and scored the game-winning touchdown.

“I’m really proud of him,” Gilfillan said. “I’m glad he had the big game. He deserves it.”

Bell ran for 35 yards late in the third quarter to set up a second touchdown against Belvidere, but it was his 31-yard run on fourth-and-3 that got the stagnant Vikings’ offense into the game.

“I made a good read and I took off,” Bell said. “Being a good team, and a close team, we were able to look at each other and say we’re going to come out and run the ball down their throats, and there is nothing they can do about it. That’s what we did, and I’m really proud of my offense.”

But Bell is more than just a good football player. Gilfillan said he is a great student and the heart and soul of a veteran team looking to compete for a conference title.

“He works hard, and he leads us every week,” he said. “He’s just a leader. He’s student council president, 4.0 (grade point average). Those are the kind of kids you want good things to happen for, and it’s happening for him.”
