The Great Lakes Shrine Association’s (GLSA) wild and wacky annual parade is coming to Rockford for the first time ever Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade will be in downtown Rockford and will feature units from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Ontario Canada.
The GLSA Parade will feature motorcycles, mini cars of every shape and size, the magical flying carpets, mini bikes and three-wheelers. Plus, antique cars, Indy cars, giant 36-man bicycles, Oriental and pipe bands, drill teams, horse patrols, and of course, the loveable Shriner clowns. Some parades feature one or two of these units. But, this parade will feature them all in one place. Local Shrine officials say Rockford has never seen a parade like this one.
The GLSA Parade will begin in downtown Rockford at the Rockford Park District Ice House, run south on Madison, west on state and north on Main Street to Beattie Park.
Parade unit competitions will also be held in the Rockford area Friday, Sept. 24, and will be open to public viewing. For competition location information, visit tebala.org or call (815) 332-2010.
The Tebala Shrine organization is affiliated with the Shriners of North America, an international fraternity of approximately half a million members. The Tebala Shrine organizes a number of community activities each year. These include the Shrine Circus in early summer, the Blackhawk Vintage Classic in June, the Island Luau Dance in August and the Karnival of Karnage haunted house in October.
As part of its mission, the Tebala Shrine in Rockford also provides financial underwriting and other support to children from the community who qualify for treatment at Shriners Hospitals.
