Womanspace hosts double art exhibit opening reception—‘35’ and ‘Nature Works’ debut today (Sept. 24)

Womanspace invites the general public to a special opening reception today, Friday, Sept. 24, from 5:30-8 p.m. with art, music, poetry and refreshments. “35” showcases a variety of art representing 35 years of Womanspace in Gallery 1; Cindy Hughes’ one-woman show “Nature Works” premieres in Gallery 3.
“35” is in Gallery 1 in the main building on the Womanspace campus, a half-mile west of Rock Valley College at 3333 Maria Linden Drive in Rockford. This colorful exhibit kicks off the 35th anniversary year of Womanspace in Rockford and features 22 talented artists in a variety of media, including Dorothy Bock, Fran Bock, Delores Burkholder, Barbara Gardner Burns, Holly Gilbey, Karen Gines, Marsha Goodheart, Charlotte Hackin, Judy Hayes, Elaine Hirschenberger, Cathy Hodges, Gordie Johnson, Pat Lai, Cynthia Linnabary, Sue Mount, Tracy Pease, Wanie Reeverts, Dee Santorini, Barbara Santucci, Chrissy Stanfa, Jeffrey Swanberg and Maddie Witt. Music will be performed by acoustic guitarist John Burns; Dorothy Bock, Karen Gines, Wanie Reeverts and Barbara Santucci will share their poetry.
“Nature Works” is a one-woman exhibit featuring two- and three-dimensional works by Womanspace member and local artist, Cindy Hughes. It opens Sept. 24 in Gallery 3 at the same time as “35.” Both exhibits will be open during Artscene from 5 to 9 p.m., Oct. 1, and from 3 to 9 p.m., Oct. 2.
The exhibits are on view at Womanspace through Nov. 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday, plus evenings and weekends when programs are scheduled. Most work is available for purchase, and 40 percent of purchases benefits Womanspace and its programs.
