Legal Follies gets new name, returns in 2011
By Jim Hagerty
The once-popular Legal Follies, which featured members of the legal community doing sketch and musical comedy, will return in 2011.
The Rockford Dance Company announced last week the event will now be called Rockford Follies, Not Totally Legal. The production will still include members from the city’s legal sector. However, according to Rockford Follies Director Jesse Kuntz, the show’s reprisal will reach beyond the legal community and include bit players from other areas of the city.
The comedy is slated for Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at the Coronado Performing Arts Center.
“We hope to get a lot of people out and make them laugh as much as possible and unite as a community, too,” Kuntz said.
The production will be an annual fund-raiser for the Rockford Dance Company. As the Legal Follies, the comedy was produced by Prairie State Legal Services and poked fun at area politics and leaders. Its 15-year run ended in 2007.
The new format will continue the roasting of leaders and politicians, and will now include newsmakers and current events.
“There’s an abundance of talent in the legal community,” Rockford Dance Company Executive Director Cindy Jo Lantz said, “but the committee felt that since Rockfrord Dance Company will be the beneficiary of the fund-raiser, we should be more inclusive of the whole community.”
Lantz directed the 2006 and 2007 Legal Follies.
The new production will come with some familiar faces. Paul Logli, president and CEO of the United Way of Rock River Valley, and Ian Linnabary will serve as co-masters of ceremonies, while Dave Syverson, Lisa Fabiano, Doug Mark, Tim Dimke and Anne O’Keefe will also play parts.
Rehearsals will start in January, after the show is cast and scripts are approved. Those interested in being involved can visit rockforddance.com or contact Lantz at (815) 963-3341.
The Rockford Dance Company was founded in 1973 and is a nonprofit that promotes the art of dance through performance, education and community outreach. It is also a professional dance company and resident performing group at the Coronado Performing Arts Center.
