Week 5 NFL picks: Chicago, Minnesota will win; Detroit, Green Bay will lose

I’ve been writing this weekly picks column for the last three or four seasons, and I can’t recall ever having as bad of a week as I had last week. With only the Monday-night game still to be determined at press time, I was 5-8. I took the Patriots over the Dolphins in that game.

Let’s forget about the past and move onto week five, shall we? The Arizona Cardinals are at home against the New Orleans Saints. The Cardinals gave up 41 points in their loss last week to the San Diego Chargers. Drew Brees and the Saints barely snuck by the Carolina Panthers with a 2-point win in week four. The Saints should win this game, but look for the Cardinals’ defense to rebound from their rough outing last week.

The Atlanta Falcons take their show on the road to the dog pound in Cleveland. The Browns are playing like a bunch of dogs and will drop to 1-4. The Ravens host the Denver Broncos. I like Baltimore and the home field advantage in this one.

Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit and San Francisco have yet to win a game this season. They all have home games this week, but even that won’t help any of them. I predict they all will stay winless as they lose their fifth game in a row. This week, it’s Buffalo losing at home against Jacksonville and the Panthers losing at home to the Bears. The Rams will win in Detroit, and the Eagles will win in San Francisco.

Tampa Bay is coming off their bye week and should be completely healthy and rested when they make the trip to Cincinnati to meet the Bengals. I’m taking the Buccaneers to win this game on the road.

The Cowboys are another team that enjoyed having last week off. They are back to work this week at home against the Titans. I think Dallas will be strong enough to pick up their second win of the season and drop the Titans to 2-3.

The Packers play in D.C. against the Redskins. Aaron Rodgers versus Donavan McNabb. This should be one of the better games of the week. I think McNabb and his new team will prevail against the Pack.

The Houston Texans are at home against the New York Giants. The Giants didn’t look that good in their win against Chicago last week. I like the Texans at home.

Who would have predicted that after four weeks into the NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs would be the only unbeaten team? Not I. They bring their 3-0 record to Indianapolis to face the Colts. I believe the Colts are the better team, despite what the records indicate. Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts will hand the Chiefs their first loss of the year.

In the California Bowl, Oakland hosts San Diego. The Chargers should win this game, even though they have to travel into enemy territory.

The Monday-night game features the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Jets in the Big Apple. I look for Brett Favre to have a triumphant return as he faces his former team.

The Dolphins, Patriots, Steelers and the Seahawks all have this week off. I’m hoping I’m back on!
