Oct. 10 Go Bike! Rockford festival promotes bicycling, healthy foods

A group of local residents will put on a fair to promote bicycling and healthy food systems in Rockford Sunday, Oct. 10. The event, Go Bike! Rockford, will feature a free bicycle clinic sponsored by Kegel’s Bicycles, a mini-farmers’ market with Rockford-grown produce, a Bike-to-Church Day, an art exposition and auction, and two group bicycle rides.
“Many people are interested in healthy living and green lifestyles in our town,” says Go Bike! Planning Committee member, Lauren Siebert. “We want to help people come together and connect with each other.”
Go Bike! Rockford is being planned as part of 350.org’s 10/10/10 Global Work Party, a worldwide effort to raise awareness about climate change. Planning Committee member Mike Kearney of the Green Communities Coalition believes that the time is right for Rockford to unite behind this issue.
“This is a period of exciting growth for our city,” says Kearney. “A commitment to directing that development with bicycling in mind is a vital way for Rockford to rededicate itself to the Cool Cities Initiative adopted by Mayor Morrissey in 2008.”
As part of the event, the Planning Committee is circulating a petition that calls for the proposed development plan for Main Street to be expanded to include bike lanes. “We have to develop infrastructure that raises awareness and encourages safety for cyclists in our community,” says Planning Committee member Steve Forss.
In addition to furthering the cause of bicycling, Go Bike! Rockford is also partnering with Angelic Organics Learning Center Urban Initiative to support sustainable and urban agriculture.
“When it comes to supporting sustainable practices, creating bike-friendly streets and building healthy local food systems fit naturally together,” says Danica Hoehn, director of the Urban Initiative and Go Bike! Committee member.
Go Bike! Rockford will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10 at Brown Park, 2010 N. Main St. in Rockford. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to all. For more information about attending or participating in Go Bike! Rockford, e-mail gobikerockford@gmail.com [1].
