Rockford CROP Hunger Walk set for Oct. 17
From press release
This year, the CROP Hunger Walk is Sunday, Oct. 17, and is dedicated to Edie Applegate, lay representative from Court Street United Methodist Church, who set up and managed the last four CROP Walks. She died this last spring.
Registration will take place at 1 p.m., and step-off begins at 2 p.m. from Riverfront Museum Park, 711 N. Main St., Rockford, next to Discovery Center.
The CROP Hunger Walk raises money from the walkers, who find sponsors. More than45 religious congregations and civic organizations as well as businesses support more than 300 walkers.
Last year, the Walk raised $33,000. This will be the 24th CROP Hunger Walk, and next year a special celebration is planned. The money is divided among local food pantries and worldwide hunger relief through Church World Service, the largest such organization. People are welcome to designate other overseas relief organizations as well.
Chairman is Rev. David Jones of First Presbyterian Church, Rockford, who has led the Walk successfully for the last four years. He is a retired Presbyterian clergyman, chairs the committee, and will recruit churches, schools and other organizations to participate in the Walk.
