First rehearsal for 65th anniversary of Handel’s Messiah Oct. 17

In 1945, a group of music lovers decided Rockford people needed something positive to lift our spirits after the war. They formed a choral union and presented Handel’s Messiah. This year is the 65th anniversary of the singing of the Messiah in Rockford, scheduled for 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, and 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 200 N. First St., Rockford.
Presented by the Rockford Choral Union (RCU), new members are welcome to join the chorus’ production of Messiah. No religious affiliation is required.
All ages and all parts are needed. A $5 fee is required to join RCU. Those interested simply need to attend a rehearsal to join.
Attendees can bring their own Messiah score or purchase one for $10. The event will be contucted by Nat Bauer, and accompanied by a chamber orchestra (Concertmistress Rachel Handlin), harpsichord (Kay Hotchkiss) and pipe organ (Jea Yi). Four internationally-acclaimed vocal soloists and a trumpet soloist will be featured.
There is no admission fee for the event, but a free-will offering will be received.
Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 920 Third Ave., Rockford. First rehearsal is Oct. 17. Rehearsal dates are Oct. 24 and 31, and Nov. 7, 14 and 21. Dress rehearsal is Friday, Nov. 26.
This year, the concerts will be attended by reporters from American Profile magazine. They are doing a story about Rockford’s Messiah. Ten million people will read all about this anniversary concert.
