Audiences can now relive the experience of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra’s (RSO) April 24, 2010, performance of Pictures at an Exhibition, coordinated with Rockford “photochoreography.”
The performance garnered enormous response from the audience, inspiring the release of a live performance DVD, available for pre-order through the RSO Office. DVDs of this unforgettable performance are available to pre-order through Oct. 22. A sample of the performance is available to view on the RSO’s YouTube page at http://www.youtube.com/RockfordSymphony. DVDs are $20 each. Composer Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition served as the inspiration for the project, which features the works of professional photographers from the region who shared their views of Rockford through a series of images projected above the orchestra. Photographers with work featured in the presentation included Nels Akerlund, Jeffrey Anderson, Pablo Korona, Bradley Nordlof, Valerie Olafson, Steve Pitkin, Sherry Pritz and Hans Rupert. The hundreds of photos were meticulously coordinated with the music by Curt Johnsen, Rockford Park District multimedia/events production specialist and RSO production manager.
Pictures at an Exhibition was presented a second time at the July 2010 ComEd Independence Day Spectacular at Starlight Theatre at Rock Valley College.
Under the artistic leadership of Music Director Steven Larsen, the RSO is a leading arts organization in the Rockford region and the third-largest symphony orchestra in the state of Illinois. The RSO is composed of 85 professional musicians who perform 17 concerts per year—including classics, pops, ballet and opera—for an estimated annual audience of 30,000. The RSO was named the 2007 Orchestra of the Year for Illinois and celebrated its 75th anniversary during the 2009/10 season.
