From press release
Operation Migration’s (OM) 2010 class of whooping crane chicks has made it to the first stop in a 1,200-mile journey from Necedah, Wis., to Florida. With the launch of the 2010 migration, OM marks its 10th year rearing, conditioning, imprinting, and leading endangered whooping cranes on migration.
Operation Migration pilots in ultra-light aircraft will lead the 12 juvenile cranes through Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia to reach the birds’ wintering habitats at Chassahowitzka and St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuges along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
There will be a public flyover and photo opportunity near the Winnebago County stopover location. The designated public viewing location is the shelterhouse and parking lot at Pecatonica River Forest Preserve, 7260 Judd Road in Pecatonica. This is the entrance to the campground and education center. Park in the forest preserve parking lot. The date of Operation Migration’s arrival in Winnebago County is unknown at this time, but was targeted for the second week in October. Anticipated arrival time is approximately 7:30 a.m., but is highly variable.
The best way to be notified of the Operation Migration team’s status is to follow OM’s Twitter updates. For those who are not already Twitter users, it’s quite easy. Create a log-in/password and enable mobile updates (in settings). OM’s official Twitter address is: http://www.twitter.com/OperMigration [1]. Once at the OM page, sign up to “Follow” OM… and if they have enabled mobile “tweets” every time the OM staff issues tweet news, it arrives at subscribers’ cell phones. Once staff knows for certain the group is flying that day, they’ll tweet about it and give an ETA for the arrival at Pecatonica River Forest Preserve.
Another way to track the progress of the 2010 migration is the daily reports posted in The Field Journal on the Operation Migration website,www.operationmigration.org [2]. These fascinating reports often indicate the migration team’s current location, weather forecast, and the probability of flight the following morning.
Another public viewing opportunity will occur as the planes and cranes depart from Winnebago County. Departure date is entirely weather dependent. Take-off is usually shortly after sunrise. Viewing site is on North Hoisington Road, just outside the town of Pecatonica, Ill. The exact location is only 0.68 miles from the intersection of Saunders and North Hoisington Road.
