The fall season is a busy one for families. From Halloween at the end of October and Thanksgiving in November, many are continuously on the move until well after the holidays. In between trick-or-treating and holiday shopping, check out all the activities and classes Rockford Art Museum (RAM) offers for busy kids and teens this season.

Children’s classes

While the current feature exhibition at RAM, Spaces Within, focuses on art relating to the architecture of interior spaces, the related children’s classes are all about space—outer space! Do you have a child who is interested in aliens or space exploration? If you do, then they will enjoy these classes.

Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., join us for Martian Madness (for ages 6 and older). Your child will discover the wonders of space as they create their own unique solar system. After they create their universe, they’ll use their imagination and drawing skills to create the aliens that will populate their planets.

If your child has a burning desire to become an astronaut, then mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 11, 2-3:30 p.m., for the final class in the series, Blast Off! (for ages 6 and older). Kids don’t have to be rocket scientists to build one of these svelte spacecrafts. All they will need is the right stuff: cardboard, glue, tape and a big dose of aeronautic creativity. Once their shuttle has taken them to a distant planet, they can create a Mars rover to explore the terrain.

Leadership Day at RAM

If you are a high school student interested in pursuing a career in the arts, Rockford Art Museum holds an event each year that can help find a program and school that is right for you. Every November, RAM hosts Leadership in the Arts: Resource and Career Day. This event gives high school and junior college students a chance to meet with representatives from art programs at colleges in the region and beyond. Instead of spending gas money to make multiple trips to these schools, RAM brings them to you! Think of it as a one-stop shopping experience for your next step.

Thursday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students can come—for FREE—to Rockford Art Museum with their portfolios and questions to gather information about admission to the following schools: Columbia College Chicago, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Northern Illinois University, Rasmussen College, Rockford College, Rock Valley College, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Southern Illinois University.

Homeschool classes

Are you a homeschool parent looking to add art to your student’s curriculum?  RAM offers four classes in November and December that are specifically geared toward homeschool children. Nov. 3, join us for “Oaxacan Folk Animals.” Learn about the traditional folk art of Mexico, and create your own one-of-a-kind animalito. Nov. 17, our class is dedicated to Spaces Within. Children who register for this class will tour the feature exhibition with a docent (museum tour guide) and then have a hands-on activity with the current Artist in Residence, local artist Brandon Hansen.

Dec. 1, RAM and Rockford Dance Company (RDC) team up for “Dance and Degas.” Students will explore music and movement while analyzing how their bodies work with RDC. Students will learn about gesture drawing and work on creating their own stop-motion painting with RAM. “Van Gogh with the Flow” is the final class of 2010. Kids will get inspired by the impasto technique used by Vincent van Gogh to make a sculptural masterpiece. They will learn about the life of the famous Dutch artist, and examine his paintings and techniques. They will then use Model Magic, paints and colored pencils to create an ornament and a painting in the style of Van Gogh.

Register for any of these classes by calling (815) 972-2874. Read more about RAM programming at rockfordartmuseum.org.
