Week 8 NFL picks: Broncos will sack 49ers at Wembley Stadium

It’s very flattering when people ask me questions about professional football. For some reason, they think just because I write this column, I have some degree of expertise about the league. As much as I wish that were true, nothing is further from the truth.

Let me set the record straight, I have no idea why the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers are playing in London this week. I also don’t know how those two particular teams got picked to represent the NFL across the pond.

I’m 100-percent positive I could be creative and make something up, but that just wouldn’t be the right thing to do to those people who are looking to me for a legitimate answer. I’d suggest you send an e-mail to the NFL and ask someone there. I’m just not sure they’d be able to give you a correct answer, either.

My job is to try to pick the winners of the games and write about it; beyond that, I yield to those who actually know about stuff like that. Therefore, I’ll stick with making my predictions for week number eight of the season. In that game at Wembley Stadium, I’m taking the Denver Broncos.

Back here in the states, I like Dallas at home against Jacksonville. The Dolphins will have to swim a few hundred miles upstream to take on the Bengals in Cincinnati. I look for the fish to embarrass the cats.

Kansas City is at home against the Buffalo Bills. Despite their respectable showing against the Ravens last week, the Bills aren’t that good of a team, especially on the road. The Redskins will make it two in a row over NFC North teams this week when they tame the Lions at Ford Field in Detroit.

When two bad teams face each other I always take the home team. Therefore, St. Louis gets my vote this week over Carolina. The Packers head to New York to take on the Jets. I think the team in the green and white will beat the team in the green and gold. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez had last week to rest up and prepare for the Pack. I look for him to show that he is just as good or possibly even better than Packer qb Aaron Rogers.

The Titans travel to the west coast to face the Chargers. I look for Tennessee to win on the road. Brett Favre and his Vikings square off against Tom Brady and the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Both qbs will end up in the hall of fame regardless of the outcome of this game. Look for the younger Brady to outplay the elder Favre and lead his team to victory.

I like Arizona at home against Tampa Bay and Oakland at home against Seattle. The Raiders put up 59 points last week on the road in Denver. I don’t think Seattle’s defense will give up that many, but they will lose nonetheless.

I think what should be the best game of the week is the Pittsburgh and New Orleans game in the Big Easy. The Saints were embarrassed by their poor play against the Browns last week. The Steelers squeaked by the Dolphins by one point. Neither team should be feeling good about those performances. Both teams need to pick up their level of play. I think the Steelers will get the upset win on the road.

In the Monday-night game, the Colts are at home against the Houston Texans. Bet the farm on Peyton Manning and the Colts to avenge their 34-24 loss to the Texans back on Sept. 12 in Houston.

The Bears, Falcons, Eagles, Ravens, Giants and Browns all have the weekend off.
