Auburn students hold fund-raiser to benefit MAYA’s House Nov. 12

Tickets for dinner-and-dance fund-raiser at Giovanni’s will be available at the door

Hannah Mesa and Cassidy Gerczak, two Auburn High School students, will hold a fund-raiser to benefit MAYA’s House, a daycare for homeless children, Friday, Nov. 12.
With the theme, “Welcome to the Jungle,” the event will be a dinner and dance at Giovanni’s Restaurant, priced at $30 per person, $280 for a table of 10, or dance only, $9. Credit card payments can be made by phone to Shelter Care Ministries at (815) 964-5520, or mail your check to Shelter Care, 412 N. Church St., Rockford, IL 61103. Dance tickets will be available at the door.
The evening will include a dinner, silent auction and dance featuring 97 ZOK’s Steve Shannon as DJ. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. including music by the Auburn CAPA Jazz Band. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. The dance portion of the evening runs from 8 to 11 p.m.
Come out to Giovanni’s at 610 N. Bell School Road and support a great cause.
Hannah Mesa spoke with The Rock River Times and explained how they happened to choose MAYA’s House.
“Over the summer, I volunteered [at MAYA’s House] with my friends,” Mesa said. “I was talking about sometimes Rockford needs exciting things, and we were like—kids like to hold dance parties, and DJs will charge $9 to $10. We should host one, but we didn’t really want to profit from it. So we wanted to put that money toward a neat organization, and MAYA’s House was touching because I volunteered for it. It was something that was really personal—raising money for these kids in Rockford who don’t have a lot of things that most people take for granted. … Our attendance list is all over 100, and that’s just high school students that will come.”
MAYA’s House website says: “Our goal is to help homeless families with child care, parenting, literacy, public health, mental health and to provide a network for community referrals. Homeless parents can leave their children up to 10 hours a week under supervision of MAYA’s House staff while they look for a job, attempt to find housing, attend education classes or job training or work on goals that would help them achieve self-sufficiency.”
