Demolition of Barber-Colman buildings begins

From press release

The asbestos abatement of buildings No. 10 and No. 19 of the Barber-Colman complex began the morning of Monday, Nov. 8. Actual structure demolition is expected to begin Thursday, Nov. 11. The project has a contract deadline for completion of Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011.

The funding source for this demolition is the Community Development Block Grant Recovery Act (CDBG-R) funds. This funding was secured under the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These funds are providing our community with a significant opportunity to address critical housing and economic development needs. These funds will be used to help create jobs and generate maximum economic benefits in the long term by the removal of dilapidated blighted structures, and also ensuring that the land is environmentally clean while at the same time making the vacant property available for economic development by the private sector.

Motorists are urged to use caution while driving in and around this area. Traffic control will be in place to and from the job site.

For questions about this project, contact Dean Kurth, Environmental Storm Water Project manager for Public Works Department at (815) 987-5570.
