YWCA hosts three-part video series titled ‘Race: the Power of an Illusion’
From press release
Much of what we call “race” today is non-phenotypical; all of what we call “race” is non-biological. To challenge predominant beliefs about race today, the YWCA has scheduled a three-part training series titled “Race: the Power of an Illusion.” Participants of the series are presented with the challenge to “unlearn” one of the fundamental beliefs in society today, the belief that human beings come divided into a few distinct biological groups.
This training is open to the public, and individuals interested in an academic study accompanied by open dialogues. It is designed to encourage us to question commonly-held, often inaccurate cultural and scientific beliefs surrounding race. The YWCA believes that only through education will true community unity be achieved.
Sessions will run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for three consecutive weeks, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 1. the second session will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, and the series concludes Thursday, Dec. 16. Cost for the training is $30 per person per session or $75 per person for all three sessions. Participants are encouraged to consider taking part in all three sessions for maximum impact. Early registration is encouraged and required by Nov. 29; each session is limited to 25 individuals.
The series will be held at the YWCA of Rockford, 4990 E. State St., Rockford. For more information and to register, visit the website at ywca.org/rockford, or call Danita Lewis at (815) 316-6122, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
