International Culture Potluck at West Middle School Saturday, Nov. 13

A variety of delectable dishes will be offered up during the International Culture Potluck, a first-year event organized as part of a week-long cultural celebration at West Middle School.
Hummus, egg rolls, lasagna and dahl (an Indian lentil soup) are just a few of the foods students and teachers will prepare to represent their ethnic backgrounds. The potluck is open to the public from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at West, 1900 N. Rockton Ave.. Admission is $3 or a dish to pass.
Proceeds are being used to offset the cost of extracurricular events, such as Rec Night and West Fest.
The potluck culminates Cultural Awareness Week, organized by staff and the students in the Newcomer Program, which helps transition immigrants, refugees and others who have beginning English skills and limited formal education. About 75 students take part in the program at West, coming from more than a dozen countries including Mongolia, Pakistan, Tanzania, India and Burma.
As part of Cultural Awareness Week, students in the Newcomer Program will give presentations on the location of their native countries and the kinds of cultural and political issues happening there, including the plight of refugees.
An assembly at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, features student speakers, visitors from a local mosque, who will talk about Muslims in America, and performances by West’s dance and drama clubs.
“Students will learn about how being different is a positive thing,” said Victor Schoonover, a West teacher who helped organize the event. “I hope it raises a level of consciousness and brings students together.”
