Chicago Rockford International Airport expands Cancun flights

From press release

Travelers headed to Cancun, Mexico, now have more nonstop flights from Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD).

Apple Vacations has nearly doubled its Cancun service out of RFD this upcoming winter and spring. Service expands to include three flights a week during peak travel periods, giving vacationers more options for packages. The new schedule is as follows:

• Sunday, Dec. 26;

• Sunday, Jan. 3, and Saturday, Jan. 8;

• Sundays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from Jan. 9 through April 9;

• Saturdays only from April 16 through June 25.

Because of RFD’s free parking, short wait times and hassle-free experience, it draws Cancun passengers from as far as three hours away—including northern and central Illinois. Located near Interstate 39, RFD is more convenient to many Illinois residents than Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport or Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Travelers returning from Cancun at RFD can get cleared by U.S. Customs in 30 minutes or less, and then don’t have to brave heavy traffic on the way home.

Airport Executive Director Bob O’Brien said: “More and more people are realizing they can fly non-stop to Cancun and avoid costly parking fees, big-city traffic and long security lines. RFD has an international-grade facility that can get them to their vacation much more easily than they thought possible. With Apple Vacations’ expanded service, we expect to see even more people switch to RFD this winter and spring.”

Apple Vacations’ flights will be operated by Allegiant Air on 150-seat MD-80s. Flights depart RFD at 10 a.m. and arrive in Cancun at 1:45 p.m. Return flights depart Cancun at 2:45 p.m. and arrive at RFD at 6:30 p.m. Travelers can take flights alone or take advantage of RFD-exclusive Apple Vacations packages that include rooms at excellent Cancun resorts. RFD flies nonstop to seven world-class destinations: Orlando, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Fort Myers Area, West Palm Beach and Cancun. Besides free parking, passengers can take advantage of curbside baggage assistance, free WIFI, short check-in and security lines, and a children’s play area.

“RFD is the way flying to Cancun should be,” O’Brien said. “We look forward to proving that to each of our new and returning visitors from throughout Illinois.”
