Salon collects toys to brighten lives of homeless students

From press release

With the holiday season in full swing, a local hair salon is offering free haircuts in exchange for new toys for homeless children who attend Rockford Public Schools.

Stylists at Rapunzel’s Hair Care, 2300 N. Main St., are coming in on their normal day off to give free cuts to anyone who brings a toy with a value of at least $10. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 5.

In addition, the salon will accept toys and checks made out to Youth Services Network until Wednesday, Dec. 15. The money will be used to buy toys and other items the children need. All proceeds benefit Rockford students.

More than 750 students currently enrolled in Rockford Public Schools are homeless.

In 2009, the “Toys for Cuts” drive—now in its 20th year—brought in gifts for 200 students  from more than 50 families.

“This is important to our kids. Many of them have had to leave everything behind, including their toys,” said Elmer Rice, homeless student advocate for Rockford Public Schools. “The parents don’t have a lot of resources, so any time they get something, it’s special to them. It’s a fresh start for them, a new beginning.”
