To the Editor: Save our officers

December 1, 2010

“Pennywise and pound foolish” comes to mind with any thoughts of eliminating the Rockford Police Community Service officers or the M3 streets team. The high crime rate in this city will only get higher, and we will be even less safe.

Our officers have been invaluable in helping us to organize and work with them to make our area a safer place to live. A “pro-active” mind-set of individuals instead of reacting after the fact will develop safer neighborhoods and be more cost effective in the long run.

Residents working together with our police officers also help develop a stronger bond between neighbors and the police department. In addition to 911 or the non-emergency number, we have an officer to call who follows up and keeps us updated on the status. Drugs, shootings, burglaries and murders are all costly and are keeping Rockford from being the city it could become. Eliminating officers that are invaluable in accomplishing this goal is foolish.

Some of the other things our officers do: Teach the Citizens Police Academy, which is open to the public, and a wonderful program for learning how the police department works; from that program, CAP (Citizens Assisting Police) has been developed for those that would like to volunteer at the department; the community service officers work at National Night Out; attend neighborhood meetings, and many other activities.

The M3 streets team provide manpower for drug and burglary stakeouts and prostitution stings. Again, our crime rate says NO to the loss of any of these programs.

Please call, write or e-mail your alderman and Mayor Morrissey regarding how you feel about these cuts. A petition drive has also been started. For more information or to help, e-mail lkay43@hotmail.com.
