By Susan Johnson
Susan Therese Mavity’s book, The Light Within: The Gift of a Rose, was not written as a Christmas story, yet it seems especially appropriate at the Season of Light. She takes us along on her own search for healing—physical, emotional and spiritual. What began as an allergic reaction to an antibiotic that seemed to snowball out of control, burying Susan in an avalanche of helplessness and despair, became the doorway to a whole new concept of self and purpose.
As the assault on her immune system turned her world upside down, leaving her helpless to cope with even everyday family responsibilities, she fell into hopelessness. Then, one day a friend gave her a prayer card of St. Therese, The Little Flower. This simple gift became a lifeline for the author at a time when she was lost in darkness. Gradually, through many trials both physical and emotional, Susan Mavity opened up to the spirituality that was the key to the mind-body connection in healing.
Finding that conventional medicine was inadequate to help her, Susan Mavity turned to alternative therapies, and thus began a journey of self-discovery. This is the story of how she found her own path of healing—often a rocky, difficult path with many obstacles and tests of her faith—but somehow, just when she needed them most, “roses” (either literal or symbolic) would appear along the way.
At crucial times, Susan Mavity’s path would cross with just the right person to help her advance along her journey to wholeness. Each time, her sense of self-concept was enlightened as she was taken to the next level. Her progress was not achieved without setbacks or discouragement, and there was much more involved here than “the power of positive thinking.” Real lifestyle changes had to be made, and personal negativity had to be faced and dealt with. With a background of 20 years in education, Susan decided to take what she had learned and use it to help others who were in need of finding wholeness.
In 2004, Susan started Inner Resources, Inc., a company to help others explore their inner gifts to bring mind, body and spirit together. She offers both private sessions and group workshops to help educate people in finding harmony and balance. She stated: “I had found a new place of healing and a way to help others. I had looked at healing as an onion. Our soul and spirit are the core, our very essence. All the trauma and experiences we have, both good and bad, are the outer layers of the onion blocking the energy to the source.”
Susan Therese Mavity has found her source. You can, too. I heartily recommend this book as a gift at Christmas or anytime, for anyone who could benefit from an inspiring story of hope, who wants to find “The Light Within.” The book is priced at $12, published by Eloquent Books, Durham, Conn., ISBN: 978-1-60911-484-8, available at amazon.com.
