Food Bank’s Rockford branch in need of volunteers

Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) is in need of volunteers to assist in feeding our hungry neighbors. NIFB distributes more than 3 million pounds of food every month, but beforehand, some of the best food sits in its Rockford warehouse awaiting volunteers to evaluate, sort, label and box the product.
Chris White, NIFB Rockford branch manager, said: “The last thing we want to see is good food sitting in our facility. The donated foods we receive from companies like Del Monte and Sara Lee will really help a lot of people, but until volunteers process the product, we can’t distribute it.”
Volunteer shifts are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.; the first and third Wednesday of the month from 6 to 8:30 p.m.; the second Saturday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.; and the fourth Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. For all shifts other than the fourth Saturday, volunteers need to be 14 years old. The fourth Saturday is a youth shift, so volunteers can be as young as 8 years old.
NIFB can accommodate up to 40 volunteers at one time at its Rockford Branch, so this is not only a great way to give back to the community, but many groups have found it to be a rewarding team-building opportunity. Feeding America’s Food Bank of the Year, NIFB is a non-profit organization that provides food to all those in need through its 665 partner agencies in 13 counties. NIFB acquires, gathers, handles and distributes donated, government and purchased food to more than 61,000 different people each week through local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, youth activity centers and other food assistance sites. In Fiscal Year 2010, NIFB distributed more than 35 million pounds of food. The Food Bank has launched a capital campaign to build a new Food Distribution and Community Nutrition Center to enable them to handle more food more efficiently to meet increasing demand.
