‘Get Moving: Playing with Food’ Jan. 22

From press release

To start the year off on a healthy note, Discovery Center is hosting “Get Moving: Playing with Food” from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22. Get in on the adventure of discovering the pyramid as participants gather grains, vary veggies, flip through the fruits, discover the dairy, overhaul oils, and manage meats.

Learn some great ways to get moving to keep your body healthy. The Winnebago County Health Department and the U of I Extension Office will do several interactive cooking demonstrations where visitors can learn how to make smoothies, hummus and pyramid tortillas. Children will also learn how to measure ingredients and cook safely in the kitchen.

Medical students from the University of Illinois College of Medicine will help visitors compare their heart rates before and after physical exercise. Children can also make buttons and color the pyramid with staff from the YMCA.

No registration is required. Participation is included with museum admission: $7 adults, and $7 children ages 2-17.

This event is part of the “Get Moving!” initiative in Rockford. GetMoving! is a local community initiative to facilitate active living and healthier eating through policy and environmental changes. To learn more about Get Moving!, visit getmovingnow.net.
