Madigan Creek focus of Jan. 24 event at photography studio

Learn more about Madigan Creek, a hidden stream in our back yard, at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 24, at David Olson Photography Studio inside the Clock Tower, 7801 E. State St., Rockford (next to the Tilted Kilt).
The program will include a visual tour of Madigan Creek, which is an urban stream that flows into the Kishwaukee River in Cherry Valley.
It drains an area of southeast Rockford, unincorporated Winnebago County and Cherry Valley roughly bounded by Guilford Road, Bell School Road, Mulford Road and Interstate 39.
Madigan Creek has many of the problems typical of a stream that drains an urban area—pollution, flooding and erosion.
Local residents and the Kishwaukee River Ecosystem Partnership (KREP) asked the county to help develop a watershed management plan for the creek, and were able to secure a planning grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Work on the watershed plan will begin this spring, with help from KREP, the Friends of Madigan Creek, the City of Rockford, the Village of Cherry Valley, Rockford Township, Rockford Park District and Winnebago County.
Sponsored by the Blackhawk Group of the Sierra Club and the Kishwaukee River Ecosystem Partnership, the program is free and open to the public.
